3.0 out of 5 stars Not Hardy, June 29, 2012

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The Seagate Backup Plus is an external hard disk drive that comes with built-in back-up software. The manufacturer suggests it is an ideal drive for backups by the laptop-toting road warrior.

The drive appears to be an internal laptop drive enclosed in its own case and connected by a USB cable to the computer. The cord is a little short but a longer cord can be purchased from third parties. There are no technical specs available either with the containing box and instructions or from the manufacturer's web site. Besides USB 2 or 3 technology, the drive can also be used with Firewire 800 or Thunderbolt technology, although that will require the purchase of an appropriate cord. I wasn't sure about the speed of the disk but I did a complete backup to this drive in the same amount of time as the same backup took to one of my larger, desk-top sized external backup drives. The drive draws it power from the USB port and this appears adequate. (A Seagate drive that I purchased several years ago for laptop backup required a special cord so that power could be drawn from two USB ports, which are usually in short supply on a laptop.) The drive also includes a one-year subscription for cloud storage which I did not try.

The manufacturer includes backup and recovery software for Windows on the drive and provides a downloadable program on its web site for Apple computers. This program has flashier elements like the ability to synch Facebook output, but the heart was an ability to save data files from the computer to this backup drive. This program allows scheduling of the backup on a basis from monthly to continuously. Unfortunately, the backup software does not provide for a mirror image of the computer drive. Anyone who has had a crash without a saved mirror image will have had the annoying experience of having to load program files (including the operating system) back onto the computer one-by-one, and encountering problems where programs had been loaded onto the computer by downloading from a web site. The solution is a mirror image of one's disk drive, which includes everything on the computer drive, including programs, operating system, etc (and can be recovered with a recovery disk). For that reason, I'd recommend that folks use Windows 7's backup program which will create a mirror image, even though it will take a lot longer than just backing up data files.

The manufacturer also suggests that this is an ideal disk drive to carry on the road with one's laptop. Unfortunately, the lovely looking case for this drive is probably even more fragile than the protection that a laptop provides for its internal drive. Although I did no "hard-knocks" testing, there appears to be no additional armor on this drive. For twenty or so more dollars one can purchase an external drive by the same or another manufacturer that is armored and hardened. If you are really serious about backing up you would be better advised to purchase such a drive.

Every disk drive in the world has a specification called mean time to failure. The question is not whether but when a laptop drive will fail. Prudent individuals will make sure they have a backup plan. This external drive can help a minimal plan, but I would not feel comfortable carrying this drive on the road.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
The Seagate Backup Plus portable external hard drive is a backup device for people who want to save their computer files in case the computer crashes. It is easy to install, it comes with the backup plus unit and a USB cord to hook up to the computer. I am not a social network user but the product description includes information about using the Seagate Backup Plus to save files backed up from smart phones and the social networks. The Seagate Dashboard is easily installed on the computer and will automatically back up any files posted. I have been looking for an external drive to use to save all my computer files and the Seagate Backup Plus is the one for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars eSATA connection breaks, October 25, 2009
First, the bad (so you know right away): As several other reviews have mentioned in various locations, don't count on the eSATA connection working for long. It worked fine for the first few months (I used it just once a week at most to backup my desktop drives). Then, it started working only inconsistently and I had to use the MUCH slower USB 2 connection. Now, the eSATA connection has not worked for a long time. On the good side, it worked very speedily when the eSATA connection on the drive was functional and I haven't had any complaints about the drive itself. It's just I would have bought a different and even pricier setup so that I could have used the eSATA interface. I wouldn't recommend this drive if you want to use the eSATA connection on the drive.

5.0 out of 5 stars no problems for me, December 2, 2010

I bought this drive in March 2009 after my computer crashed and I lost a lot of data (yes, my own fault). That computer died completely not too long after and I bought a cheap replacement which died two months ago. I now have a new computer with this Fantom drive connected via the USB port, same as with the previous two computers. The drive has worked perfectly with all three computers (first with XP, second with Vista and now with 7). I mainly use it for backing up my huge music collection and photos. I borrowed a computer from work for a few weeks when my second one died in October and I played music files directly from the Fantom drive and they sounded perfect. Never a skip or pause. Since I bought the drive for home/personal use it is fast enough to suit me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy, January 26, 2010
By
Aaron Maltz (Eugene, OR United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'll try to avoid repeating the common complaints leading to the failure of this drive: rattling death sound, inability to find files, etc. I'll also briefly mention the frustrations trying to contact Fantom's customer service: three e-mails and three phone calls with no reply until I finally, miraculously, reached someone on my forth phone attempt. And finally, the flat diagnostic charge with no guarantee of data recovery, despite the fact that my drive failed within four months of purchase. And you foot the shipping as well. Rather than provide the company with another drive to refurbish and re-sell, while being stuck with a product that would most likely fail within six months, I decided to do my own diagnostic work.

These drives are not meant to be taken apart by anyone without the proper tools; that is to say, there were no easy screws to get the drive out of the shell. But, with enough application, it happened. And to my surprise, when I removed the external from the shell, was a giant Western Digital sticker plastered on the drive.

Western Digital has notorious USB problems and drive failures. When I researched external hard drives before deciding on the Fantom, I consciously decided not to buy Western Digital. They seemed to have a one-in-four failure rate. So I was pretty peeved when I discovered that I had inadvertently bought one.

Money is tight for most and when relatively expensive products fail on a regular basis, it breeds frustration. I am deeply frustrated with my external hard drive situation. I spent good money on a product that I feel, deceived me. The customer service response was less than stellar and their ability to help felt sub-par. I cannot, under any circumstances, recommend this product to anyone. If you do/have purchased one and it hasn't failed, consider yourself lucky. Otherwise, avoid at all costs.
