4.0 out of 5 stars XL edition is pretty good, April 5, 2012

I bought the XL edition, having owned both GT3 and GT4 and having never played GT5. The game is as fun and challenging as I expected and there is a huge variety of tracks and cars and events. The game itself is good and the only complaint that I have would be the load times, which are frequent and long enough to really distract from the game itself.

As far as the XL edition specifically is concerned, it probably wasn't the best choice for me. It was nice that all of the game updates were included etc etc and most of the XL content is great but the fact that so many good cars were included right at the beginning of the game actually kind of ruined the game for me. I instantly took the Red Bull prototype car (by far the fastest in the game and worth about 20 million credits) and began destroying races in it. I quickly collected millions of dollars, which allowed me to purchase awesome cars for the races which the redbull car couldn't enter.

I say this kind of ruined the game because Gran Turismo, at it's core, has always derived it's pleasure from pain. The pain of being dominated in races because you have neither enough credits nor enough talent to win this race or that. This experience in frustration always challenged me to rise above and save money to upgrade my car and do license tests to improve my skills etc. until I finally, after pouring so much into the game, had the satisfaction of winning that event. Having really fast cars for free has taken most of that experience away. Races are easy when your car can lap the fastest opponent (despite crashing several times). This reduces the need for driving skill and really lowers the overall satisfaction of the game. So, what I've had to do is start trying to find the worst car that I can for each race or series and try to win with that. It brings some of the satisfaction back, but the experience still lacks the underdog feeling that I always got from starting out on the rock bottom and clawing my way to the top.

Overall, the game is great despite inordinately long load times, but if you are like me and always liked GT because of the work involved in mastering it, the XL edition might not be the best choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Driving Simulator, February 2, 2012
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars

I have been playing the Gran Turismo series since Gran Turismo 2 for the Playstation (PSX).

The series has come a long way, since the bug-ridden days of GT 2 but this latest iteration isn't perfect either.

The developers are constantly updating this game, with new tracks, cars, and updates, about a year and a half since the game has been released. This definitely helps with the games longevity.

While it is disappointing that there are segregated "Premium" and "Standard" cars, at least the Standard cars now have a darkened "Driver's View". Still, it is weird to have two graphically different cars on the same racetrack, one with so many polygons, and another duller vehicle with less polygons. Graphically this franchise has been leaps and bounds ahead of other race franchises, too bad GT 5 didn't keep up with it's own pace graphically.

The B-Spec, is a large part of the game if you get into it but the mechanics there are so simple, it's kind of bland. It gets boring really quickly. But the thing is a lot of B-Spec events also net you prize cars, so if you are hunting for all cars...guess you gotta go through with it.

So the 5 star "fun rating" and 4 star "overall rating" stem primarily from the A-Spec and player-driven aspect of the game. I've played this game with a controller and with a steering wheel and in both cases it is lots of fun. Driving real cars, especially weak ones, doesn't sound like fun, but this game makes it fun. Hmmm..wonder if I take my neighbors car and throttle it in a race circuit, what would happen? Or even my own car? Or my parents car? It's awesome to be able to play a game and do away with the speed limits (so long as their car has more than 66hp :).

This game is so in-depth, the customization seemingly endless, it's awesome to dress up your car the way you want to. This is the very reason that this game may not be the best thing to happen to people who have OCD-tendencies...

I haven't even touched the online races, but the ability to race against other random people or your friends while setting your own restrictions/rules is awesome. There simply is not a better game to put your pedal to the metal!

GT5 is the best Gran Turismo yet and with Spec 2.0 and worth of DLC included with this game for a low price, you can't go wrong! Even updates after Spec 2.0 came out have added a lot of features. We are at 2.4 now and new DLC coming in March sometime. It just keeps getting better.
